No. 94 - Colour https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2016/9/no-94---colour I've said before that my preference is normally always B&W..... even my business card is B&W - it's minimal, elegant & classic - obvs!

So this is why no. 94 is all about colour.... there is just so much of it!!

This photo was taken on my iphone (4!!) I just love the backlight and poppies, this image really suits bing in colour....

And here it is in B&W.....

Love always, Jx

No. 95 - Focus https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2016/9/no-95---focus I love how in photography you can completely change the look of an image just by changing the point of focus...

The image above shows the detail of the highly elaborate decoration on display at the Princes Square shopping centre in Glasgow.  I love how you can, as a photographer, draw the viewer to exactly what you want them to see.  By the position you put the point of focus in the frame, leading lines or in this case by blurring everything else.

However, what I find interesting about this shopping centre is the quirky placement of the escalators, how they take people in different directions, and the huge architectural features that are everywhere... the perfect backdrop.

I know which image I prefer, or perhaps a better way of saying this is the image I am more drawn to.  There is no right or wrong answer your opinion will always be the right one for you, as it is yours.

No. 96 - Life https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2016/9/no-96---life No. 96 is quite straightforward, I get to photograph life.

And in the case of this photo, life on Buchanan Street, Glasgow.

No. 97 - Seeing More of this Beautiful World https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2016/9/no-97---seeing-more-of-this-beautiful-world I did not expect that when I became a professional photographer that I would travel more than I ever have.  I've worked all over the country, from north to south, and in all types of different places such as an exclusive private school, an industrial kitchen to being on the roof of a castle keep!  I'm not good with heights so that was quite an achievement for me!!

When I'm booked for a wedding, if I have not shot at the venue before I will always visit the location approx 4 weeks before the wedding - this lets me see where the sun will be (assuming it shines), I'll meet with the wedding co-ordinator and talk through how the day will work - this gives me so much insight into how the day will run, the best place to take the group photos if wet or dry and even down to any roadworks impending en-route.  Even if I have shot at a venue before, venues like to change their landscapes or interiors, or may be having renovations done - so many factors to consider!!

The shot below is from the beach at Troon.... I had had a meeting at the lovely Lochgreen House Hotel, and had explored the beach after.  I love how you can see the kite surfers just below the horizon, they go so fast!

No. 98 - Challenging Myself https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2016/9/no-98---challenging-myself I'm not a runner, since being told in primary school that I ran like a horse I decided that really I should never run in public.... I mean what!

No. 98 is all about challenging me.....

These days I don't care what I look like running, the fact that I can run a 5k or at times a 10k distance amazes me..... when I could barely run for the 30 secs that the 'couch to 10k' app was demanding of me I thought I would never make it.  And yet, today I managed a pb of 29.07 for a 5k....  my best yet, but I don't want to forget where I started so I can appreciate how far I have come.  I gave everything I had today, thought I was going to collapse at the end, but didn't.

It's the same with my photography, I always want to learn new things and challenge myself to be a better photographer, including being a better business person.  Taking the photos is actually a really small percentage of what I do, although it's the part I most enjoy, surely it would be weird to love the admin more.

I'm not sure if I can run any faster... my daughter assures me I can.... we'll see.

This is me out running.... taking a photo with my phone, I used to not be able to run without music.  I find that now when I run without music I'm so much more aware of the world around me (obvs a good thing) but it also gives me time and space to work things through...... unless I'm going for a pb, then it's a different story!

No. 99 - Prints https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2016/9/no-99---prints For today, no. 99, it has to be prints.

This is how all photos should end up - being printed!!  Whether they go in an album, or framed for the wall, I don't mind.  As long as they get printed!!

I know the world has changed and everything is digital, but when looking through old photos there is something very special about looking at prints - I of course have digital back ups, but even today I was ordering new prints for my walls.  I had a client print delivery yesterday and today - because I believe they are important both as part of my business and personally.... the difference being that photos I order for me tend to be black & white (I looove B&W), while clients tend to go for colour - it's whatever they prefer.

Here's a couple of the photos I ordered.......

I hope I've inspired you to go and get some printed this weekend too..... and prints always make the best presents for the Grannys & Grampas, in my opinion anyway :-)

100 things..... https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2016/9/100-things There are, currently, 100 days to Christmas, a fact I don't normally know.  However I love the run up to Christmas, not just because of the school events and friends parties, but you see people you haven't seen in ages, and Christmas is the perfect excuse.  This year I really wanted to focus, not to use the busyness as my reason not to be updating my blog, which I have managed to neglect for quite some time!!

So this year, I will be sharing 100 things about (or vaguely related to) photography that I love, it might get a bit random, I haven't made a list of 100 things (yet) I want to be inspired as I go, which is how I like to approach my photography.  I don't like to assume what people want from their shoot, every family/wedding/event is different.

So I'll start with no. 100

Every day is different, no two shoots are the same.... even if it's the same client booking me for an annual event.  People are different, so I approach every situation with an open mind, and capture the moments that I think best describe and record what's happening.  I've debated which photo would be most appropriate to start this 100 journey... and this from a very recent shoot seemed best - maybe it's what got me thinking about doing this!!

London Fashion Weekend #LFWEnd https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2015/11/london-fashion-weekend-lfwend As you may know... since I was so very excited to be going... I got to photograph London Fashion Weekend in September with a bunch of my SWPP (Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographer) associates as invited by Canon.  The prestigious event was held at the Saachi Gallery in London, a venue I had never visited previously let alone photograph in.    I have photographed weddings, families with kids that run around and do.not.stop. I've even photographed celebrity studded competition finals... all of this could not really prepare me for the runway.  And actually I have to say I loved it :-)  Yes, you are fighting to get the best view, yes it's extremely hot if you are under the runway lights and yes the models walk the runway extremely fast, so you have to focus fast and nail the exposure....

The show itself was amazing, hosted by Angela Scanlon, the clothes were beautiful with Peter Pilotto as the stunning high end designer finale, see below for my favourite images.

It's been interesting in the weeks since to see these dresses on personalities on TV.... one on Helen George currently on Strictly and another of the dresses on Bupsi from XFactor.... so clearly if you want access to these stunning outfits and dresses you need to get yourself to London Fashion Weekend 2016!  25-28th Feb 2016, again at the Saachi.

Katie & Michael's Wedding at the Glasgow Art Club - Glasgow Wedding Photography https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2015/6/katie-michaels-wedding-at-the-glasgow-art-club---glasgow-wedding-photography Katie & Michael are just the sweetest couple, they like everyone else to be at the centre of attention, and value their friends and family dearly.  They got married in Holycross Church and then had their reception at the Glasgow Art Club.  This is an exclusive venue situated on Bath Street in Glasgow city centre, I had not previously been to the Art Club, so was excited to have a reason to visit and explore.  It has recently has some refurbishment, including the grand hall, and we were very kindly allowed to take the bride & groom pictures there - the first ones to do so :-)

I think this is one of many reasons I love being a wedding photographer, especially in Glasgow, because you get to see behind the scenes in lots of places that you would otherwise not have access to, like Duntreath Castle, Brig O'Doon, Sherbrooke Castle, The National Piping Centre, The National Museum of Scotland and Barony Castle, to name a few.....

Here are some of the photos from Katie & Michael's wedding....

Heriot Watt Final Year Degree Show..... Lois Downs https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2015/6/heriot-watt-final-year-degree-show-lois-downs Fab day today with my daughter, and as part of her education she's written about it in her own words.......

"On Wednesday we went to Heriot Watt, borders campus.  We went there because of my cousin's final year degree show in design and textiles.  Her work that she produced was amazing.  My favourite was the camper van design because it was vintage, and when I am older I want to own my own camper van, but I am sure that my sister would disagree because she would prefer the flamingo design.  All her friends work was stunning too, it was interesting to see the different types of designs people came up with, all entirely unique, for example one of them was pixelated, knitwear over printed with gold and also layered shear panels printed to give a 3d effect."

Here are some photos showcasing Lois's talent...

Hannah & Alasdair's Wedding, Barony Castle Peebles https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2015/5/hannah-alasdairs-wedding-at-barony-castle-peebles I remember the first time going to Barony Castle, it's set in beautiful countryside and is a stunning venue, getting there is easy, I may have got a bit lost on my way back to Glasgow, but thank goodness for Sat Nav!!  It is such a beautiful venue, well worth considering for your wedding venue, because as soon as I had visited I really wanted to shoot a wedding there.

When Hannah & Alasdair told me that's where they were planning to have their wedding I was delighted, they may have had concerns that I don't travel that far - but I cover the whole of the UK, so no distance is too far.  They are just the sweetest couple, they don't like to be the centre of attention and are such a pleasure to spend time with... only trouble being that Alasdair will have you in stitches, nothing fazes him and as a result you feel like you are photographing friends. Together they planned the most amazing day for their guests and had hand crafted so many beautiful details it was a perfect day in every way..... although when I say together, Hannah did all the work :-)

Jen & James were surrounded by lots of friends and family on the day, the church was full and the sun shone, it really was a wonderful day, here are a few of the photographs from the day...

Glasgow Photography Teaching Project https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/12/glasgow-photography-teaching-project When I was asked to be involved in a project to teach people photography, my immediate answer was, of course, yes! This project was particularly special as I was invited to teach a group from the Roma community in Glasgow how to take pictures.  Previous to having my photography business I worked as a Training Consultant, which involved writing courses, delivering them and working with a team of people to allow then to effectively use new software or to facilitate team building etc, so it felt very natural to write a training course.

I really enjoyed creating the Introduction to Photography course and hope that I get to do this again as there is something special about teaching a person a skill that they didn't have before - especially when you can see the immediate results of their learning through their pictures.

Of course I was nervous, the pictures taken by my students would be used in an exhibition in Glasgow, and used by the Roma Matrix organisation around the world!!  Pictures had to be clear and in focus - no place for blurry images here!  I am delighted to say that on 27th November 2014, the exhibition opened in the Govanhill Library.... I was there, and my heart was bursting with pride when I saw all the pictures that my students had taken.  A huge thank you to Kenny Fulton and Maria Jurcova who really made this project come to life in a very short time frame and encouraged the students with their photos.

You are all very welcome to visit the exhibition, as it will be on show well into 2015, here is a sneak peek.....

Sarah & Piers Brake, Garden Wedding in Kilmacolm https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/12/sarah-piers-brake-wedding-in-kilmacolm When a Scottish wedding has a walk to and from the church on the schedule you really do want a beautiful day!!  I am pleased to say that the day Sarah and Piers got married it was indeed beautiful, and in every way.  When I got to the house there was a real sense of calm, which considering the amount of activity going on this was remarkable, but I think it really reflects not just Sarah & Piers, but their family.  Everyone was getting on with whatever it was they needed to do, excited that the day had finally arrived and were looking forward to the wedding ceremony and celebration later on.

As the photographer my aim is to document what happens throughout the day, to do this I work closely with the Bride & Groom and their families so that I am close to the action, but I also stay in the background so that even the most camera shy of guests are included in the photographs.  This wedding was lovely to photograph because everyone was so warm and welcoming, they made it very easy for me to move around the crowd, and when it came to the group shots they were very obliging.

I think because Sarah & Piers had already experienced the 'pre-wedding' shoot they trusted me completely, and I think at times forgot I was even taking photographs.... happily going out with me in the rain, that eventually decided to make an appearance later in the evening, to get some more shots..... one of which became one of Sarah's Mum's favourites.  This is why I keep pushing, to take the photos that not only the Bride and Groom love, but their nearest and dearest as well.  Here are some of the shots from their beautiful day...

Why should I book a 'Pre-Wedding' Shoot? https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/11/why-should-i-choose-to-have-a-pre-wedding-shoot When I got married (17 years ago) 'pre-wedding' shoots didn't exist, there might have been an engagement picture but that was as close as you would get.  The beauty of a pre-wedding shoot is that you get to experience what it's like working with a photographer, you get to see your love for each other documented in a beautiful way, and in a place that means something special to you both.  If you are reading this and you don't like getting your photo taken, you are certainly not alone!!  I work with the 2 of you in a very relaxed way.... showing you my tips and tricks to put you at ease and therefore capture you at your best.

Earlier this year I went to London to photograph Sarah & Piers for their pre-wedding shoot in Greenwich Park.  I had already met up with Sarah and her Mum, they had booked me for the wedding photography including a pre-wedding shoot, and since I was in London for a few days photographing another event we booked some time in for the shoot.  We had a great time at Greenwich, the weather was perfect and the rain held off thankfully until we had finished.  I have included some photos from the shoot below, and then in my next blog edition I will post some of their wedding photos.  I loved working with this couple, they are soo laid back, yet really happy to try out whatever photo I proposed.... including a shoot in the rain under an umbrella later in the evening..... more on that later.

In the meantime time here are some of their pre-wedding photos....

House for an Art Lover Wedding Photography, Paula & David https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/9/house-for-an-art-lover-wedding-photography Paula's day started on the highest floor of the tallest hotel in Glasgow, the Hilton Glasgow Hotel, which has such a stunning view over the city.  This is where the Bridal Party got ready before heading to the incredible House for an Art Lover, where Paula & David were married.  House for an Art Lover is built to a 1901 design by Charles Rennie MacKintosh, building started in 1989 and was finally completed in 1996.  It was originally a competition entry, although sadly it was disqualified due to late entry of some interior drawings.  I love all things Charles Rennie MacIntosh, he designed beautiful spaces that are just a dream to photograph in, so the fact that it rained just after the ceremony was wonderful as we got to take the group photos in the beautiful dining room.

It's not just the inside that's beautiful, the outside space around House for an Art Lover is stunning as well.... and even a little bit quirky with upturned giant jellies on the lawn!  Glasgow City Council also manage a walled garden and you can apply to use this as a background for your wedding photos as well.... something that Paula & David decided to do, and as the rain cleared just before dinner we got to take some beautiful shots there too.  Here is a small selection from the day....

This photo sums the day up for me... Paula & David just enjoy having a laugh together, and Paula you were just stunning on the day!!

Looking good girls...

...and the lads...

Paula & David I wish you every happiness for the future, Jxx

Sally & Mark's Wedding at Solsgirth House https://www.janehendersonphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/4/sally-marks-wedding-at-solsgirth-house I met Sally & Mark when Sally was bridesmaid for Kathryn, whose wedding I shot last year.  They had really only just got engaged, so when they got in touch to ask if I could photograph their wedding this year I was delighted.  These guys love design and have a fabulous eye for classic style, so when it came to taking their wedding photos I wanted to capture pictures that they would love to hang on their wall.  Neither particularly like having their photo taken as a rule, but we had such a fun time taking these pictures you really can't tell.  They always have such a laugh together and I'm so glad to see this captured in their photos.  They choose to get married at Solsgirth House, near Dollar.  This is a stunning country house, that has a little chapel attached, ideal for such occasions, but it also has little nooks and crannies, perfect for photography!  It was a wonderful day, where their families came together to celebrate their marriage, and I wish them every happiness for the future.
